2010 Whittlesea Challenge - About

Background

The Whittlesea Challenge burst onto the cycling scene in 2008 and quickly established itself as the new event of choice for Victorian cyclists.

The Whittlesea region provides the rare opportunity to escape the traffic and enjoy quiet roads, picturesque scenery and country charm only 35 minutes from central Melbourne.

2010

The 2010 Whittlesea Challenge has moved dates and will now be held on May 29th.

Entries will be open shortly, so keep your eye out and don’t miss out on your chance to ride in this fantastic event.

2009 Review

The second Whittlesea Challenge was held on Saturday August 29, 2009 with rave reviews from the 1000 cyclists who took part.

The event was organised by CycleSport Victoria, with the support of the City of Whittlesea and assistance on the day by the wonderful volunteers from the Whittlesea and Yea Rotary Clubs.

Officially opened by City of Whittlesea Mayor Mary Lalios, the event kicked off at Walker Reserve where cyclists prepared for the challenge ahead with coffee and other delights in the event village.

>Participants came from all over Victoria choosing either the 62 kilometre short course or 108 kilometre long course. Both courses featured a combination of flat sections, rolling hills and challenging climbs perfectly designed to provide cyclists with the chance to strive to achieve personal goals.

Aid Stations at Flowerdale and Wandong allowed cyclists to refuel with fruit cake and sports drink provided by Sukkie.   The SRAM support vehicles on hand to provide mechanical assistance to cyclists throughout the event.

At the conclusion of the ride, cyclists took time out to enjoy live entertainment, free massages and great range of food and drink.

Event Coordinator Mathew Hilton was ecstatic with the success of the event, despite some wet and windy weather throughout the day.

"It is exciting to see the event grow; we are already looking forward to making May 29, 2010 even bigger and better."

Participant Feedback

I am a true recreational rider with reasonable fitness and it was a challenge but enjoyable - the roads did not carry too much traffic and this enhance the safety and confidence factor for me - after my memory of a couple of the climbs fades a little I will be inclined to do it all again Well done’ Susie- Richmond

‘The marshalls did a fantastic job on course. Directions were clear and they were full of enthusiasm. I really enjoyed a non-competitive ride that had some decent hills for a change. A great event, thank you!’ Phil- Bell Park

‘Thank you for another well organised, supported cycling event in beautiful countryside.’ Joseph – Alphington

‘Thought the event was really well organised and information received was excellent. Well signposted throughout and the volunteers do an amazing job standing out there in all weathers to direct and help. It was such a shame the weather, but congratulations to those who stayed Looking forward to participating next year.’ Alison- Ringwood
