Whittlesea Challenge wows cyclists
|
Review - Saturday 29th August, 2009. The second Whittlesea Challenge was held on Saturday August 29, 2009 with rave reviews from the 1000 cyclists who took part. The event was organised by Cycle Sport Victoria, with the support of the City of Whittlesea and assistance on the day by the wonderful volunteers from the Whittlesea and Yea Rotary Clubs. Officially opened by City of Whittlesea Mayor Mary Lalios, the event kicked off at Walker Reserve where cyclists prepared for the challenge ahead with coffee and other delights in the event village. Participants came from all over Victoria choosing either the 62 kilometre short course or 108 kilometre long course. Both courses featured a combination of flat sections, rolling hills and challenging climbs perfectly designed to provide cyclists with the chance to strive to achieve personal goals. Aid Stations at Flowerdale and Wandong allowed cyclists to refuel with fruit cake and sports drink provided by Sukkie. The SRAM support vehicles on hand to provide mechanical assistance to cyclists throughout the event. At the conclusion of the ride, cyclists took time out to enjoy live entertainment, free massages and great range of food and drink. Event Coordinator Mathew Hilton was ecstatic with the success of the event, despite some wet and windy weather throughout the day. "It was fantastic to see so many people turn out despite the weather, well done to everyone who completed the course in testing conditions. "It is exciting to see the event grow; we are already looking forward to making 2010 even bigger and better." The attention of many participants will now turn to the Tour Challenge, the next recreational event on the CycleSport Victoria calender. The Tour Challenge provides the opportunity for participants to test themselves on Stage 1 of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Full event details can be found at the official event website here.
