ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 8 & 9 Recap and Results

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 8: Robinvale Kermesse, Stage 9: Euston Criterium

Canberra veteran Stuart Shaw sprinted like a young colt to regain leadership of the Elgas Tour of the Murray River after two lightning fast stages in Robinvale and Euston today.

Shaw, 32, who represented Australia twice in the world junior triathlon championships before taking up road cycling five years ago, collected 32 bonus seconds from intermediate sprints in the 52km afternoon criterium at the Euston Club Resort, to lead the tour by 10secs from Gippslander Joel Pearson, with young New Zealander Jason Williams 17secs back in third place.

As captain and strategist for the young Drapac team, Shaw won the opening 155km road stage from Echuca to Rochester on Sunday but surrendered tour leadership to Pearson in the hectic 25.5km waterfront criterium in Echuca on Monday morning.

Trailing Pearson by 16 seconds after the crash-marred 48km criterium in Robinvale today, Shaw road so aggressively with a small breakaway group at Euston that he smothered any impact that Pearson and his strong Genesys team had on the event.

The Robinvale leg was won by the speedy Malaysian Harrif Saleh who notched his third stage victory of the tour, having previously won the Echuca criterium and the 57km Nyah to Manangatang road race.

Saleh defeated Sydney's Scott Law narrowly, with Victorian Nicholas Walker in third place.

Thirteen riders were involved in a nasty pile-up only 10km into the 20-lap Robinvale criterium. Six withdrew from the race and two of them - New Zealander Jeremy Stephens and Queenslander Peter Spencer were transported to Robinvale hospital for treatment.

Shaw's team-mate Angus Morton, NSW, sustained a suspected broken collarbone and is also out of the event.

In a topsy-turvy day for the Drapac team, the Euston stage was won by Thomas Palmer, who trains with Shaw in the ACT. Second place went to New Zealander Rico Rogers, with Saleh filling the minor placing.

Shaw who was not super-confident about retaining the Elgas purple leader's jersey until the tour ends in Mildura on Sunday afternoon. "Our team is young and damaged so we will have to ride with our brains and be clever." he said.

Helmet Regulations - Reminder

Helmet Regulations - Reminder

AUSTRALIAN STANDARD AS/NZ 2063 - Bicycle Helmets

The helmet regulation was introduced as a result of cyclists having to comply with the Australian Road Rules.  The basic rule is that in all Australian events on the road and track an approved helmet with the Australian Standard sticker (AS2063) must be worn.

The only events where this may not apply are noted in Rule 3.5.02 and are explained as follows:

a) TRACK - Individual Pursuits and Individual Time Trials only. In these events aerodynamic helmets may be worn but must carry stickers confirming UCI approval, eg, ANSI, SNELL or EN.   This exemption does not apply to the Team Pursuit.  In Team Pursuits only an AS/NZ 2063 regulation helmet may be worn.

b) ROAD - UCI calendar events, including the Australian Open Road Championships, and subject to the granting of an exemption from this aspect of the Australian Road Rules by local authorities. Again, all helmets worn must carry a sticker confirming approval in accord with UCI regulations.

The CA Board amended rule 3.5.04 to permit all competitors to wear internationally approved helmets, if an Australian Road Rules exemption is granted. This is of particular relevance in the road time trial as it removes the requirement by commissaires to determine between international and domestic riders as well as providing fairness to all competitors in being able to wear an approved aerodynamic helmet.

Please note: there are now some aero-styled helmets with the AS/NZ 2063 approval available in Australia!  Rudy Project's 'Syton Super-Comp' and Limar's 'Crono 05' and 'Crono Speed Demon' are available with the Australian Standards-approved sticker.

For the full list of Australian Standards approved helmets go to

CA Technical Regulation 3.5 is reprinted hereafter for your information:

3.5 HELMETS

3.5.01. An approved helmet shall be worn at all times during competition, warming up for an event or when riding on the road at a race meeting

3.5.02. In all road & track cycling events with the exception of international UCI events, the individual pursuit and track time trials, an Australian Standards approved (AS 2063) helmet shall be worn

3.5.03. A helmet must carry the relevant approval sticker confirming approval and certification to AS/NZ 2063 before a cyclist is permitted to start in any cycling event.

3.5.04. For UCI Road Calendar events where exemption from the Australian Road Rules has been granted by the respective State authority, competitors may wear a helmet that has been approved by the UCI.

3.5.05. To obtain such approval (ref 3.5.04 above), the promoter must apply to conduct the event under an exemption permitting the wearing of non-Australian Standard helmets. Such an application must be made under the special events legislation of the respective State in which the event is being conducted.

The events for which such an application may be sought include, but may not be limited to;

· UCI Road World Cups (Men and Women)

· One-day Road Races or multi-stage Tours which have been approved for inclusion on the UCI calendar.

· The Australian Open Road Championships or similar event, where overseas or professionally contracted riders with a UCI registered team are competing and the results contribute to UCI ranking points.

3.5.06. For the individual pursuit and track time trials approved helmets shall bear either AS/NZ 2063, ANSI, Snell or EN bicycle helmet approval.

3.5.07. Any modification to an approved helmet is strictly prohibited, including; swapping or tampering with stickers; structural or aerodynamic modification.

3.5.08. Failure to comply with this regulation will result in the rider being withdrawn from the event in addition to any other penalty that may be applied by the race official.

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 6 & 7 Recap and Results

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 6: Swan Hill to Nyah West, Stage 7: Nyah to Managatang

Joel Pearson, one of the most consistent performers in Australian domestic cycling, moved a step closer today to snaring his first major stage-race victory by claiming the lead in the Elgas Tour of the Murray River.

With seven of the eight-day tour's 14 stages completed, Pearson held a four-second advantage over young New Zealander James Williamson, with Tasmanian Thimas Robinson a further 13 seconds back in third place.

Pearson, 27, whose previous biggest triumph was the 2008 Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic, won the 103km road race from Swan Hill to Nyah West in grand sprinting style, defeating the speedy Malaysian Harrif Saleh, with West Australian Anthony Giacoppo third.

He followed up with a sixth placing in the afternoon stage from Nyah to Manangatang, won in bold fashion by Saleh from New Zealander Rico Rogers, with the Canberra veteran Stuart Shaw in the minor placing.

Pearson, a member of the Tasmanian based Genesys Wealth Advisers team, finished runner-up to the blisteringly-quick Queenslander Jonathan Cantwell in last year's Murray tour and also annexed the coveted WHK criterium championship.

While Cantwell has dominated United States criterium racing this year, with numerous victories including the 17-day Superweek Classic, Pearson has quietly planned a full on assault on the Murray tour after undergoing a serious hip operation just four months ago.

He trailed Williamson by only eight seconds overnight but gave the impression throughout the two road stages that he is a cyclist full of confidence and destined for what would be a popular and well-deserved victory.

"Hopefully, I will be able to hold on to the Elgas purple jersey until the tour finishes in Mildura on Sunday," Pearson said. "The boys in my team are riding strongly and I am feeling fresher by the day."

"The Genesys team is now one of the forces to be reckoned with in Australian cycling. Most of them are from Tassie but then you have blokes like me who hail from New South Wales but live in Victoria."

"I'm feeling pretty confident about this tour. My team covered all the attacks today quite nicely."

Bayside City Council has approved the extension of the clearway zone of Beach Rd on weekends.

Bayside Council approves clearway on Beach Road

Bayside Council approves clearway on Beach Road

In a historical vote Bayside City Council has approved the extension of the clearway zone of Beach road throughout the Bayside area on weekends.  It is now believed that this is a world first – to have a clearway for such an extended distance in a large urban environment.

CycleSport Victoria is confident that the clearway will make Beach Rd safer for cyclists and reduce the stress for motorists with the certainty of specific cycle and motor vehicle lanes during the clearway times.

The current clearway will deepen the attraction of Beach Rd as a training and recreation ride venue for Melbourne and visiting cyclists. It will make a wonderful resource and cyclist experience better.
CycleSport Victoria President Glen Pearsall stated “CycleSport Victoria  welcomes the news that the Beach Rd Clearway now includes Bayside City Council.  The clearway has been a long time coming – with CSV being actively involved in promoting the need for the clearway since the start of the campaign in 2003.”

The Beach Road Cyclist group submitted a report to the Bayside City Council in 2002 that recommended a clearway, 50 k/hr speed limit and no trucks on weekend. Bayside City Council formed the “Bicycle Reference Group” to assess the report implications and included the following stakeholders; Port Phillip and Kingston city councils, Victoria Police, VicRoads, CSV and TriVic.
Pearsall continued “Port Phillip City Council implemented the clearway in 2005 and Kingston City Council in 2009. With last night’s council pro-clearway trial decision Bayside City Council will now ensure that the clearway operates from St Kilda through to Mordialloc.”

CSV would like to acknowledge the major role played by Tim Pallas, Minister for Roads and Ports in achieving this great outcome along with Michael Forbes, Alistair Murray from Bayside Bandidos cycling club, Dr James Taylor from Sandringham Hospital, Marcel Lima from Beach Road Cyclist group, Brian Hinton from TriVic as well as the dedicated individuals who presented the cyclist case at the various Bayside City Council.

Don't miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity - entries are limited!

Champion for a day - Ride the Worlds Geelong

Champion for a day - Ride the Worlds Geelong.

For the first time in the history of the UCI Road World Championships, local cyclists will get the chance to ride on the race circuit before the elite men take to the course in the battle for the rainbow jersey.

Ride the Worlds Geelong, held on the challenging 16km circuit around Geelong prior to the start of the elite men’s race on Sunday 3 October, will give up to 2500 amateur cyclists the chance to experience what it might be like to be world champion for a day. Participants will also receive a one-off Melbourne 2010 jersey and will be supporting the Amy Gillett Foundation's quest to keep everyone safer on our roads.

Phil Anderson, the first Australian to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, says this is a unique opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.

“One of the great things about going to the football as a kid was having a kick on the ground after the game. But getting to ride the course being used for the world championships before the race arrives is a once in a life time opportunity,” Anderson said.

“The atmosphere on the course for those taking part in the ride will be an experience they will never be able to recreate again in Australia.

“Riding around a closed circuit, as the anticipation is building to the main race, will give those keen cyclists who have dreamt about riding the world championships a chance to live that dream for a day.”

“No country that has hosted the World Championships in the past 73-years has done something like this,” said Anderson, who has ridden and finished the Tour de France more times (13) than any other Australian.

Ride the Worlds Geelong

Time: 8:30am - 10:30am
Where: Geelong – 16km closed race circuit of the 2010 UCI Road World Championships

Victoria will be in the international spotlight when the world’s best cyclists converge on Geelong. The UCI Road World Championships stand at the pinnacle of the world cycling calendar, ranking alongside the Tour de France as one of the most coveted prizes in cycling.

It is only the sixth time the race has been hosted outside Europe and will shine an international spotlight on Victoria, Melbourne and Geelong, with an expected global television audience of 400 million.

The UCI Road World Championships, held from Wednesday 29 September to Sunday 3 October, will include road races and individual time trials for elite men and women and under-23 men.

As a prelude to the championships, the Herald Sun World Cycling Classic Ballarat will take place on Sunday, 26 September.

The sun shone on the Elgas Tour of the Murray River today and the cream of young cyclists from Malaysia and New Zealand blossomed.

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 2 & 3 Recap and Results

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 2: Echuca Criterium, Stage 3: Moama Road Race

The sun shone on the Elgas Tour of the Murray River today and the cream of young cyclists from Malaysia and New Zealand blossomed.

The speedy Malaysian Harrif Saleh won the 25.5km morning criterium on Echuca's riverfront, while unhearalded New Zealander James Williamson rocketed to tour leadership after a brave victory in the 100km afternoon Moama road race.

The tenacious Saleh, 21, has been one of the revelations of the Scody Cup series which began with the Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland (July 28 - Aug 1) and followed with the GMHBA Tour of Geelong from Aug 11 -15.

Saleh, a track specialist in his home city of Kuala Lumpur, triumphed in the rain battered grand finale criterium in Paynesville on the Gippsland tour and was an eye catching third in the last stage of the Tour of Geelong in the Eastern Gardens.

He finished second to Stuart Shaw and Joel Pearson in yesterday's Murrray tour opening 154.5km road race through the Shire of Campapse and is on target to achieve some impressive results for Malaysia at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October.

Malaysian team road coach William Walker was all smiles after Saleh outsprinted the Genesys Wealth Advisors duo of Tasmanian Thomas Robinson and Joel Pearson in the tightly-constructed Echuca ccriterium.

"Harrif is finding some real form and the sun being out certainly helps," Walker said. "This victory is a great boost for the Malaysian boys' confidence."

Williamson's road race victory was equally popular among the 16-strong New Zealand contingent which lined up among the 131-man record field in Echuca yesterday. (Five riders withdrew overnight because of injuries sustained in the horrendous crash which saw 70 cyclists hit the bitumen).

Williamson, 21, from the South Island town of Alexandra in Central Otago, broke away from the peleton with Queenslander Timothy Dalgliesh at the 47km mark and established a 3min 30sec lead with only 15km remaining.

Dalgliesh (Merida) succumbed to the sustained pressure but the Hyster-Total Rush team member pedalled furiously to the finish line at the Rich River Golf Resort to win by 23 seconds from fellow New Zealander Rico Rogers (Swan Hill Rural City Council) with Nicholas Walker (Jayco VIS) in third place.

Williamson, the 2009 New Zealand under 23 road champion, will go into tomorrow's 45km morning criterium in Swan Hill with a 21 second advantage over Pearson, with Stuart Shaw (Drapac) and Richard Lang (Jayco Skins) a second away in equal third place.

Canberra veteran Stuart Shaw takes the honours in a crash marred opening stage of the Elgas Tour of the Murray River.

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 1 Recap and Results

ELGAS Tour of the Murray River - Stage 1: Echuca to Rochester

Canberra veteran Stuart Shaw was a surprise leader of the Elgas Tour of the Murray River today after the opening 155km stage which produced one of the biggest crashes witnessed in road cycling.

More than 70 riders from the 131-man field tumbled to the bitumen only 6km after the start of the Echuca-Rochester stage which saw Shaw triumph in a blistering sprint finish from the consistent Joel Pearson, with the speedy Malaysian Harrif Saleh in third place.

Amazingly, no riders were seriously hurt in the crash and only two - Brendan Schultz and Alastair Loutit - were forced to withdraw because of wrecked equipment.

Former Tour de France star Henk Vogels, back home from the United States as manager of the Virgin Blue RBS Morgans line up, had an up-front view of the carnage from his team vehicle and said it was the biggeest pile-up he had seen in world cycling. "In terms of numbers, yes, but not in terms of injuries," Vogels said. "It was pretty mind-blowing though."

Ballarat's Patrick Shaw, leader of the current Scody Cup series and a member of the Virgin Blue RBS Morgans team, was one of the fallen riders.

Chief Commissaire Peter Tomlinson, of NSW, was forced to neutralise the race for 25 minutes as team managers and crews scrambled to repair broken bikes and get their riders back in the event.

Shaw, 32, and his Drapac contingent managed to miss most of the impact from the fall and rode a brilliant team race to triumph in front of a large crowd in Rochester, home of one of Australia's original cycling greats, the late Sir Hubert Opperman.

The victory secured him tour leadership from Sydney's Richard Lang, who accumulated 11 bonus seconds in intermediate sprints throughout the journey, with Pearson (Genesys) in third spot.

Shaw works about 30 hours a week as a part-time draftsman for a Canberra gas company and paid tribute to the Drpac philosophy of ensuring that all members must undertake some form of tertiary education or employment.

"It was an agressive stage with no wind but I managed to get my old legs going at the finish," Shaw said.
