Past Events Geelong World Cup Challenge - 24th February 2008
On Sunday February 24, an impressive field of enthusiastic cyclists took to the streets of Geelong and the surf coast shire to participate in the the inaugural Cyclo Sportif Victoria Geelong World Cup Challenge.
The picturesque and challenging 80km course commenced on the start line of the UCI Women’s World Cup, and cyclists were able to ride part of the course, before heading to the areas of Freshwater Creek, Bellbrae, Jan Juc, Torquay and Breamlea and riders were greeted with perfect weather conditions upon arrival at the Geelong foreshore.
City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood, a keen road rider in the local area, lead the peloton out of Geelong, with CycleSport Victoria President Klaus Mueller and Board Member Trevor Wilkie by his side.
All participants in the Challenge had their ride professionally timed using a state-of-the-art transponder which was fitted to the ankle of each rider. It accurately recorded the riders overall event time as well as providing a split time for their climb up Bellbrae Hill. To check out these times please click here.
Riders were also comforted in the knowledge that the event featured qualified bicycle mechanics and fully equipped support van on course to provide professional support, in addition to food/aid stations refreshing the cyclists along the course.
Following the 80km ride, the Geelong Advertiser Family Fun Ride took cyclists on a more relaxed 12km scenic ride.
All participant were then able to stay around and enjoy the great festivities on the Geelong Waterfront and catch the Women's World Cup action.
Event Coordinator Adam Smith was excited by the success of the first event on the Cyclo Sportif Victoria recreational ride calendar for 2008.
"The challenge provided a great opportunity for cyclists to ride a world class course and all participants thoroughly enjoyed not only the great course, but the support provided to them throughout," Smith stated.
CycloSportif Victoria would like to thank the following as the Geelong World Cup Challenge would not have been possible without their support and contributions:
• CycleSport Victoria
